The D1 in Slovakia

The D1 in Slovakia

Slovakia is an important player in trans-European transport. Their main road, the D1 is a part of the TEN-T network and extends from the country’s capital, Bratislava and is being extended to the Ukrainian border. So far, more than 400km of the route have been built; a couple dozen are currently being constructed, and nearly a 100km of road is planned. The D1 is Slovakia’s longest and busiest motorway making it a strategic element in cross-border trade.

The D1 route connects Bratislava, Žilina, Košice, Uzhhorod, and Lviv, covering the following roads: E50, E58, E75, E571. The D1 is also a part of the V.A. Pan-European Corridor (Trieste) making it a popular route for many cross-border truck drivers.

Its history

The route began construction in the 1930’s in the current Czech region of Czechoslovakia. Nothing was created in Slovakia until after the post-WWll reconstruction period. Plans were set in the 1960s, and in 1973 the first section from Bratislava to Senec was completed. While this was in progress, a strip of road began between Ivachnová – Liptovský Mikuláš. With these constructions on their way, the Slovakian infrastructure began its speedy growth, with further sections being added up into the late 1980s. However, following the fall of communism, much of the route’s construction was delayed until the early 2000s. Once Slovakia was accessioned into the European Union, more attention and resources were poured back into finishing the project.

Construction works continue today, and the planned date for finishing the entire motorway from Bratislava to Košice is unclear. Of the little over 400km of completed motorway, the D1 serves as a cross-border route for much of Eastern European transport. Apart from its strong road network and connectivity, its affordability also makes it a common stop for trucks before crossing into Czechia, Austria and even Poland.
