Smart trailers and self-driving vehicles
Connected Supply Chain, Connected Vehicles
All parties in the supply chain generate vast amounts of data. When data from different parts of the supply chain are combined, analysed, and used correctly, there is a lot of room for improvement, cost savings, and increased efficiency. More and more transportation companies are harnessing the power hidden in the vast amounts of data they can have at their disposal.
Next to onboard computers and other devices at the driver’s disposal, trucks have become sources of actionable information. Each new model comes with more and better sensors, measuring the performance of many truck parts. Some parts of the truck have become connected themselves. The Internet of Things (IoT) enables these to communicate actively with vehicle management systems. This allows mechanics to find and solve problems quickly, enabling proactive maintenance. Parts can signal if they need to be repaired or replaced.
Connected Vehicles, Connected Trailers
Similar technology is being built into trailers, whether that’s regular or refrigerated trailers. Connected trailers are equipped with various sensors measuring and monitoring things like lights, weight, temperature, tire pressure, doors, suspension, and more. If all this information is analysed, serious breakdowns can be averted. Data from the trailer is shared with the driver and the planners at the head office. Next to the actionable information about the performance of the equipment, sensors also relate security-related data from the GPS sensor, the locking system on the doors, a coupling sensor, or an RFID tractor detection sensor, to name a few examples.
Now, planners not only know where the trailer is and that the temperature-sensitive load is still at the required temperature. They now also get a warning that a tail light needs to be replaced or a part of the suspension isn’t functioning correctly anymore. They can proactively schedule a stop at a repair shop before something serious happens, the trailer breaks down, and the customer’s precious cargo gets stuck.
Self-Driving Trucks and Smart Trailers
It is a matter of time before we see self-driving trucks on the European road network. These super intelligent and connected vehicles will be pulling super smart trailers. If there is a problem, the truck can solve it by automatically scheduling a stop along the route to get the problem sorted out.
We see a future where self-driving trucks connect directly to the TRAVIS platform as they get smarter. These trucks will automatically find and book the service they need based on the rules and requirements programmed by their owners. Until then, planners and drivers can quickly find, book, and pay for road services like truck washing, secure parking and repairs through the TRAVIS platform and the TRAVIS Drivers App.
