Frankfurt am Main Airport, also known as Rhine-Main Airport, is the second busiest airport in Europe in terms of freight traffic. The airport handles more than 2.3 million tons of cargo every year. No other airport in Europe has so many freight forwarding companies on the premises. It’s an attractive location for airlines.
The airport has a long history, which started in 1909. The first ever European airline was founded in Frankfurt am Main. The airport played a crucial role in the Berlin Airlift when the Soviet Union blocked all road and rail traffic to West Berlin in 1948. Since then, it has grown into an airport with four runways, two large passenger terminals, and excellent air cargo facilities. A third terminal is currently under construction.
Since the Berlin Airlift, the airport has expanded to become the second-largest airport in Europe. Its cargo hubs on the North and South side of the airport are well connected to the German road network. Thousands of trucks drop off and collect the millions of tons of airfreight that are shipped through Rhine-Main Airport. The airport is close to the Frankfurter Kreuz, an intersection of the A3 and the A5.
