As a transport planner, you fulfil an essential role: you make sure drivers and vehicles get from A to B as efficiently as possible. Things like the type of shipment and mandatory breaks have to be factored in to plan routes as efficiently as possible. As if that isn’t complex enough, trucks need to be washed, inside and out (HACCP regulations), tankcleaning may be necessary and drivers with international destinations could require overnight stays. Mechanical failure or minor damage to a vehicle? That has to be fixed as soon as possible. In practice, this leads to planners (or drivers) having to find the right service location on the fly, based on their specific circumstances. Not only does this make it hard to keep track of the fleets’ service usage, it also leads to unnecessary downtime, detour mileage and drivers encountering language barriers at repair locations.
Less detours means more deliveries
In some cases, truckwash may be mandatory. For instance if a driver needs to pick up a shipment of clothing after just delivering a full trailer of perishables. Ideally the cleaning would take place somewhere on the way from the delivery address to the new pick-up point. As each unnecessary kilometre costs time and money, it would be best for the truck to be cleaned without any detours. With no additional mileage, the driver will be on time more often. That way stricter agreements with clients can be made and ultimately more shipments can be delivered in the same amount of time. The same goes for overnight parking. If the driver has a guaranteed secured parking spot on the way to his next destination, the detour mileage and risk of cargo theft will be reduced.
